At Building Up Bold, literacy is about more than reading and writing skills, it’s about confidence, identity, and helping students feel powerful in their own voices. Our literacy coaching is designed to support students who may struggle in traditional classrooms but thrive with hands-on, relationship-centered learning.
Meet Trey
Trey works with Building Up Bold students to help them strengthen their writing, find their voice, and feel confident expressing who they are. As a doctoral student in English Education and an award-winning author of Southern Migrant Mixtape, Trey brings both expertise and deep care to the literacy work he does with young people.
At Building Up Bold, Trey supports students who may struggle in traditional classrooms by helping them use reading and writing as tools for self-expression, confidence-building, and emotional processing. He works closely with students to develop their ideas, organize their thoughts, and tell their stories in ways that feel authentic and empowering. This includes supporting students as they write about personal experiences, frustrations, and challenges turning those moments into growth rather than shutdown.
Trey's approach centers students’ full self. He creates supportive, inclusive spaces where students feel safe taking academic risks, asking questions, and sharing their truth. Through writing coaching and literacy support, he helps students build skills while also feeling seen, valued, and capable.
Trey is available to help with secondary reading and writing, College entry essays, and college level writing in the humanities.
Helping Students Become Confident, Thoughtful Readers, Write
Meet Rosa
Rosa works with Building Up Bold students to strengthen their reading, writing, and critical-thinking skills while building confidence as learners. With more than 15 years of experience in education, Rosa brings a thoughtful, supportive approach to helping students develop skills that carry beyond the classroom.
At Building Up Bold, Rosa helps students understand what they read, ask questions, make connections, organize their ideas, and communicate their thinking clearly. She also supports students with Spanish language acquisition, reading, and writing.
Rosa believes every student learns differently and may need different tools to experience success. As a parent of a young adult with ADHD, she understands the importance of breaking larger tasks into manageable steps, building on strengths, and creating space for students to grow at their own pace.
Rosa is available to help with elementary and middle school reading, writing, critical thinking, Spanish language acquisition, and Spanish reading and writing.
Math/Science Subject Support
At Building Up Bold, academic subject support is about helping students gain confidence while truly understanding what they’re learning. We focus on making challenging subjects approachable and relevant, so students can see how concepts connect to their own ideas and experiences. Our hands-on, supportive approach helps students stay engaged, build problem-solving skills, and feel proud of their growth both in the classroom and beyond.
Meet Tess:
Tess works with Building Up Bold students to demystify the worlds of math and science, helping them transform daunting equations and complex theories into tools for success. As a former middle and high school teacher who now tutors full-time, Tess brings years of classroom expertise and a deep passion for one-on-one mentorship to every session.
At Building Up Bold, Tess specializes in a wide range of subjects, including Chemistry, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and AP Statistics. Understanding that STEM subjects can often feel like "gatekeeper" courses, she focuses on breaking down difficult concepts into manageable steps. Tess is a firm believer in the power of the "aha!" moment and is dedicated to reteaching and re-explaining material as many times as necessary until a student feels a true sense of mastery.
Tess’s approach centers on the individual student’s strengths. She believes STEM is vital for developing a student's ability to plan through challenges and approach obstacles from various perspectives. Because every brain works differently, Tess often teaches multiple strategies for the same problem, collaborating with the student to find the specific path forward that feels most intuitive to them.
Through patient coaching and expert instruction, Tess helps students build academic skills while fostering a sense of resilience. When she isn’t helping students conquer variables and chemical reactions, you can find Tess riding her motorcycle through the scenic roads of the North Bay.
At Building Up Bold, her work ensures that students don’t just pass their classes they walk away as confident, capable problem-solvers ready to take on any challenge.
SAT SUPPORT
MEET JASMINE
Jasmine is a senior at Casa Grande High School who has challenged herself with a rigorous academic schedule, including a wide range of AP, Honors, and Dual Enrollment courses at local junior colleges. Through her dedication and strong work ethic, she has earned an impressive 4.7 GPA and achieved a 1510 on the SAT.
In addition to her academic achievements, Jasmine is highly skilled in SAT tutoring. Having mastered the exam herself, she is able to break down complex concepts, share effective test-taking strategies, and help students build both confidence and consistency in their performance. Her ability to connect with students and explain material in clear, approachable ways makes her an especially effective tutor.
With a clear vision for her future, Jasmine plans to attend a four-year university where she will major in biology and continue on the path toward medical school. Her commitment to academic excellence, combined with her long-term goals in the medical field, reflects both her ambition and her passion for making a meaningful impact.
Jasmine has been accepted to: UCLA, UC Berkely, University of Michigan, Northeastern, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, and Cal Poly SLO - She is waiting to hear back from colleges in the next couple week
